It seems as if every problem we try to solve has "side effects".
We're still working on Judith's pain that is caused by the extension of her abdomen. She is wearing a patch that gives her a constant stream of opiates, and I am able to give her IV opiates for "breakthrough pain". The IV med doesn't seem to help the pain much, but does cause her to sleep a lot, which is kind of a way of avoiding pain.
So -- we can kill the pain sensation, but lose Judith for hours at a time.
The hospice nurse spent hours today working on this with our oncologist and Stan (the pharmacist) and we will be trying some new meds tomorrow.
In the meantime, we've got a sorta painful, very sleepy lady on our hands.
